"He brought out his arm and the hand was cut off.."

"He brought out his arm and the hand was cut off.."

Some fighters came from Syria, heading for Yemen, and ‘Umar had dishes of food that he would set out after Fajr. One of those men came and sat down, and started to eat, using his left. ‘Umar – who used to watch the people whilest they were eating – said to him: “Eat with your right hand,” but he did not respond ‘Umar repeated it, and he said, “O’ Ameer al-Mu’mineen, it is busy.” When he had finished eating, ‘Umar called him and said, “What kept your right hand busy?” He brought out his arm and the hand was cut off. ‘Umar said, “What is this?” He said, “I lost my hand on the day of al-Yarmook.” He said, “Who does wudoo’ for you?” He said, “I do wudoo’ with my left hand, and Allah helps me.” He said, “Where are you going?” He said, “Yemen, to my mother whom I have not seen for many years.” He said, “And you honour your mother too.” And he ordered that he be given a servant and five camels from the camels given in charity, and he loaded them up for him.”

"I want my wife to be..."

I want her to be...

Khalid bin Safwan saw a group in the mosque of Basrah, and he said, “What is this gathering?”

He was told, “There is a woman who informs men about women who are available for marriage.”

He went to her and said,”I want to marry a woman.”

She said, “Describe her to me.”

He said, “I want her to be a virgin who is wise like a married woman, or a married woman who is innocent like a virgin; she should be sweet when she is near, splendid when she is at a distance, she should have lived a life of luxury and then became afflicted with poverty — so she has the manners of the rich and the humility of the poor. When we gather wealth we should be as the people of the world, and when we become poor, we should be as the people of the Hereafter.”

She said, “I know of such a woman for you.” He said, “And where is she?” She said, “In Paradise, so work to achieve her!”

The thirst of ibn al Mubarak...

The thirst of ibn al Mubarak...

When knowledge really benefits its seeker

Suwayd ibn Sa'id: 'I saw 'Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak in Makkah as he went to the (water of) zamzam and drank from it. Then he faced the Ka'bah and said,

'O Allah, Ibn al-Mawali narrated to us from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jabir from the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) that he said, 'The water of Zamzam is for whatever it's drank for [1]' and here I am drinking it to prevent the thirst of the Day of Judgement.' Then he drank it.
[Sifat al-Safwah, vol. 2; pg 325]

I think more than anything, what was impressive is that Ibn al-Mubarak the muhaddith, utilised his knowledge of the hadith as well as its isnad before acting upon it. He narrated the riwayah back to Allah and then asked Allah based on it. Subhanallah, this is when knowledge really benefits...

“O Messenger of Allah! Indeed, I love you…”

“O Messenger of Allah! Indeed, I love you…”

‘A’ishah reported that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: “O Messenger of Allah! Indeed, I love you more than I love myself, and I love you more than I love my family, and I love you more than I love my children. When I am at home and I think of you, I am unable to contain myself until I can come to you and look at you. When I think about my death and your death, I know that when you enter Paradise, you will be raised to where the Prophets are. But, if I enter Paradise, I am afraid: will I be able to see you?”
So, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not answer him at all until Jibril revealed to him: {And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger, then they will be in the company of those on whom Allah has bestowed His Grace - of the Prophets, the truthful, the martyrs and the righteous. And how excellent these companions are!”} [an-Nisa’; 69]
