Allah Subahnu Wa Ta'ka says in his noble Quran : {Verily in the messenger of Allah ye have a good example for him who looketh unto Allah and the Last Day, and remembereth Allah much.}[ Sura Al-Ahzaab: verse 21].

The aboev verse talks about itself so there is no need to explain it. Inshallah, through the Hadith we shall go thru today we can benefit from our best and only example in this life; the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم ).

Narrated Anas: While the Prophet was in the house of one of his wives, one of the mothers of the believers sent a meal in a dish. The wife at whose house the Prophet was, struck the hand of the servant, causing the dish to fall and break. The Prophet gathered the broken pieces of the dish and then started collecting on them the food which had been in the dish and said, "Your mother (my wife) felt jealous." Then he detained the servant till a (sound) dish was brought from the wife at whose house he was. He gave the sound dish to the wife whose dish had been broken and kept the broken one at the house where it had been broken [Sahih Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 62, Number 152: ]

Learn Wisdom from the "Wise Reminder"

Allah describes the Qur’an as being wise: “This which We recite unto you is a revelation and a wise reminder.” [Sūrah Āl `Imrān: 58]; and: “(I swear) by the wise Qur’an” [Sūrah YāSīn: 2]

We can discern two reasons for this:

1. It is a manifestation of Allah's wisdom that He sent to us the teaching revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the Qur’an.

2. The religious teachings that Allah has set forth for us in the Qur’an are full of wisdom.

The Wise Qur’an contains teachings that can help remedy many of the problems we face today, whether those problems are social, economic, or political. What the Qur’an provides us with are the general governing principles by which we will be rightly guided in all walks of life. However, not everyone will be equally effective in applying these general principles to their practical experience. For instance, scholars of Islamic jurisprudence study the Qur’an to derive from it legal principles and apply them to practical legal problems.

On the authority of al-Asma‘ī, that he said, “I was once walking in the village when I came across a stone. Someone had written on it:

"O lovers! By Allah, tell me!
If a young man is overcome by love, what should he do?" 

So I wrote underneath it:

"Let him treat his desire, then conceal his secret
And humble himself in every matter and submit (before his Lord)"

I returned the next day and I found written underneath it:

"But how can it be treated when that desire fights the man
And every day his heart is torn to pieces?!"

So I wrote underneath it:

"If he is unable to be patient with concealing his secret
Then there is nothing for him except death that will benefit!"

I then returned on the third day to find a young man lying dead at the stone. I said, ‘Lā hawla wa lā quwwata illā billāhil-‘Alī’l-‘Adhīm!’ and found that he had written before his death:

"We have heard and we have obeyed; now we have died so tell everyone
My salām to the one who prevented me from attaining her."

So dear brothers and sisters, next time we give advice to such people, just remember you’re dealing with hearts full of love not vessels full of stone.

Some fighters came from Syria, heading for Yemen, and ‘Umar had dishes of food that he would set out after Fajr. One of those men came and sat down, and started to eat, using his left. ‘Umar – who used to watch the people whilest they were eating – said to him: “Eat with your right hand,” but he did not respond ‘Umar repeated it, and he said, “O’ Ameer al-Mu’mineen, it is busy.” When he had finished eating, ‘Umar called him and said, “What kept your right hand busy?” He brought out his arm and the hand was cut off. ‘Umar said, “What is this?” He said, “I lost my hand on the day of al-Yarmook.” He said, “Who does wudoo’ for you?” He said, “I do wudoo’ with my left hand, and Allah helps me.” He said, “Where are you going?” He said, “Yemen, to my mother whom I have not seen for many years.” He said, “And you honour your mother too.” And he ordered that he be given a servant and five camels from the camels given in charity, and he loaded them up for him.”

My Enemies, I Thank You

Fostering enmity is the meanest of all human activities. Unfortunately, creating enmity between people requires nothing more than a good helping of stupidity served up with poor judgment and a disregard for people’s feelings. With these ingredients, you can soon find yourself surrounded by a host of people wrangling, cursing, and hating each other.

Experience has taught me the wisdom of exercising patience with those who argue with me, to show them courtesy and apply the remedy prescribed in the Qur’an: to respond with what is better. “Repel (evil) with what is best. Then the person between whom and you there had been enmity will become as if he were a dear friend.” [Sūrah Fussilat: 34]

It is reported in the Sahih of Imam Al-Bukhari and other authentic collections of hadith that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions used to fast on the 10th day of Muharram (Ashura) while they were in Makkah (before the hijrah). It was a day on which people of Makkah used to change the covering (kiswah) of the Kabah. Quraysh also used to fast on this day. (Al-Bukhari, hadith 1489 and 1760)

After the hijrah when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, he found that the Jews of Madinah also used to observe this day with fasting. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them the reason of their fasting on this day. They said, “This is a blessed day. On this day Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy (in Egypt) and so Prophet Musa fasted on this day giving thanks to Allah.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “We have more claim to Musa than you.” He fasted on that day and commanded Muslims to fast on this day. (Al-Bukhari, hadith 1865)

Ibn Abbas quoted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as saying, “If I live next year, I shall also fast on the 9th day.” (Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal, hadith 2002)

There is a great reward in fasting the day of Ashura. There are many hadiths that mention its blessings and virtues. It is good to fast on this day, although it is not obligatory.

152. Therefore Remember Me (by praying, glorifying, etc.). I will Remember you, and be grateful to Me (for My countless Favours on you) and never be ungrateful to Me.

153. O You who believe! seek help In patience and As-Salât (the prayer). Truly! Allâh is with As-Sâbirin (the patient ones, etc.).

154. and Say not of those who are killed In the Way of Allâh, "They are dead." Nay, they are living, but You perceive (it) not.

155. and Certainly, we shall test You with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sâbirin (the patient ones, etc.).

156. Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: "Truly! to Allâh we belong and Truly, to Him we shall return."

The Prophet said, "Medina is a sanctuary from that place to that. Its trees should not be cut and no heresy should be innovated nor any sin should be committed in it, and whoever innovates in it an heresy or commits sins (bad deeds), then he will incur the curse of Allah, the angels, and all the people." Bukhari :: Book 3 :: Volume 30 :: Hadith 91

Allah's Apostle said, "Verily, Belief returns and goes back to Medina as a snake returns and goes back to its hole (when in danger)." Bukhari :: Book 3 :: Volume 30 :: Hadith 100

Narrated Anas bin Malik:
The Prophet said, "There will be no town which Ad-Dajjal will not enter except Mecca and Medina, and there will be no entrance (road) (of both Mecca and Medina) but the angels will be standing in rows guarding it against him, and then Medina will shake with its inhabitants thrice (i.e. three earth-quakes will take place) and Allah will expel all the nonbelievers and the hypocrites from it."  Bukhari :: Book 3 :: Volume 30 :: Hadith 105

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

When the servant is put into his grave and all his fellows turn away to leave him, he will hear the sound of their footsteps. Two angels will approach him and ask him: "Who is your Lord, what is your religion, who is your prophet?"

The believer will answer: "My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam and my Prophet is Muhammad."

Then they will ask him: "How did you know that?"

He will reply: "I have read Allah’s book and believed in it."

A caller from the heavens will say: "My servant is correct. Lay him a bed from Paradise and cover him with it and open for him a door to Paradise."

He will feel and smell the scent of Paradise and will see into it as far as his eyes can see.

The soul of the unbeliever will come back to his body in his grave. The two angels will come to him and ask him: "Who is your Lord?"

He will reply: "Oh, I do not know."

They will ask him: "What is your religion?"

He will reply: "Oh, I do not know."

They will ask him: "Who is that man who was sent to you?"

He will reply: "Oh, I do not know."

A caller from the heavens will say: "My servant did not answer correctly. Lay him a mat of Hell, cover him with it and open for him a door to Hell."

He will feel the heat of Hell. His grave will be narrowed for him until his ribs converge on each other. A blind and deaf man will be assigned to hit him with a steel bar that could turn a mountain into dust. He will hit him with it once then the unbeliever will shout with a loud voice that could be heard by everything save for humans and Jinn. He will turn into dust. Then his soul will return back to him again.

It is related from Anas b. Mâlik that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, regarding the Day of Resurrection:

They will approach Abraham (to intercede for them) but he will say: “I am not for it.”

He will mention three lies that he spoke and then say: “Instead, go to Moses…” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (7440) and Sahîh Muslim (193)]

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) explains to us the nature of these lies, saying:

Firstly: 

One of the greatest attributes of Allaah is wisdom, and one of His greatest names is al-Hakeem (the most Wise). It should be noted that He has not created anything in vain; exalted be Allaah far above such a thing. Rather He creates things for great and wise reasons, and for sublime purposes. Those who know them know them and those who do not know them do not know them. Allaah has stated that in His Holy Book, where He says that He has not created mankind in vain, and He has not created the heavens and the earth in vain.

When can I start fasting six days of Shawwal, since we have annual leave right now?

You can start fasting six days of Shawwaal from the second day of Shawwaal, because it is haraam to fast on the day of Eid. You can fast the six days at any time during Shawwaal, although the best of good deeds are those which are done soonest.

The standing committee received the following question:

Should fasting the six days be done immediately after Ramadaan, following the day of Eid or is it permissible to do it a few days after Eid in the month of Shawwaal or not?

They replied as follows:

These days do not have to be fasted immediately after Eid al-Fitr; it is permissible to start fasting them one or more days after Eid, and they may be done consecutively or separately during the month of Shawwaal, according to what is easier for a person. There is plenty of room for maneuver in this matter, and this is not obligatory, it is Sunnah.

And Allaah is the Source of strength. May Allaah bless our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions and grant them peace.

How should we observe Laylat al-Qadr? Is it by praying, or by reading Qur’aan and the Prophet’s Seerah, listening to lectures and lessons and by celebrating it in the mosque?.

Praise be to Allaah.  

Firstly: 

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to strive hard in worship during the last ten days of Ramadaan as he never did at any other time, praying, reading Qur’aan and making du’aa’. Al-Bukhaari and Muslim narrated from ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) that when the last ten days of Ramadaan came, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) would stay up at night and would wake his family up, and would abstain from marital relations. Ahmad and Muslim narrated that he used to used to strive hard in worship during the last ten days of Ramadaan as he never did at any other time.

Some women take pills in Ramadaan to stop their periods. They do this so that they will not have to make up any fasts afterwards. Is this permissible and are there any restrictions on their doing this?

Praise be to Allaah.

I think that women should not do this and they should remain on the menstrual cycle that Allaah has decreed for them and for all the daughters of Adam. There is wisdom behind it and a reason for which Allaah created it, and this wisdom befits the nature of women. If a woman tries to stop this cycle, it will undoubtedly have a harmful effect on her body, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.” This is besides the fact that these pills can do harm to the uterus as the doctors have stated. What I think with regard to this issue is that women should not use these pills. Praise be to Allaah for His decree and wisdom. When a woman’s period comes, she should stop fasting and praying, and when her period is over she should resume fasting and praying; when Ramadaan is over she should make up the fasts that she has missed.

Is it permissible to fast without praying?.

Praise be to Allaah.  

No good deeds will be accepted from one who does not pray – no zakaah, no fasting, no Hajj or anything else. 

Al-Bukhaari (520) narrated that Buraydah said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever does not pray ‘Asr, his good deeds will be annulled.” 

What is meant by “his good deeds will be annulled” is that they will be rendered invalid and will be of no benefit to him. This hadeeth indicates that Allaah will not accept any good deed from one who does not pray, so the one who does not pray will not benefit at all from his good deeds and no good deed of his will be taken up to Allaah. 

It seems from the hadeeth that there are two types of those who do not pray: those who do not pray at all, which annuls all their good deeds, and those who do not offer a particular prayer on a particular day, which annuls the good deeds of that day. So annulment of all good deeds happens to those who forsake all the prayers, and annulment of the good deeds of a particular day happens to the one who omits a particular prayer.

Talha ibn ‘Ubaydallah (radhiallahu `anhu) reported that two men came to the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) who had accepted Islam at the same time. One of them used to partake in Jihad more-so than the other, and so (one day) he fought in a battle and was martyred therein. The other remained behind him for another year, and then he passed away.

What is the reward for giving iftaar to one who is fasting?

Praise be to Allaah.  

It was narrated that Zayd ibn Khaalid al-Juhani said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever gives iftaar to one who is fasting will have a reward like his, without that detracting from the reward of the fasting person in the slightest.”  

Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 807; Ibn Maajah, 1746. Classed as saheeh by Ibn Hibaan, 8/216 and by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami, 6415. 

Shaykh al-Islam [Ibn Taymiyah] said: What is meant by giving him iftaar is giving him enough to satisfy him. Al-Ikhtiyaaraat, p. 194 

The righteous salaf were keen to provide food for others and they thought that this was one of the best of righteous deeds. 

One of the salaf said:  For me to invite ten of my companions and feed them food that they like is dearer to me than freeing ten of the sons of Ismaa’eel from slavery. 

Many of the salaf used to give up their iftaar for others, such as ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him), Dawood al-Taa’i, Maalik ibn Dinar and Ahmad ibn Hanbal. Ibn ‘Umar used only to break his fast with orphans and the poor and needy. 

There were among the salaf those who used to offer food to their brothers whilst fasting, and they would sit and serve them, such as al-Hasan and Ibn al-Mubaarak. 

Abu al-Siwaar al-‘Adawi said: Men from the tribe of Banu ‘Adiyy used to pray in this mosque and not one of them would break his fast on his own; if they found someone to join them they would eat with him, otherwise they would take their food out to the mosque and eat with the people, and the people would eat with them. 

From the ‘ibaadah of providing food for people stem many other acts of worship such as creating love and friendship towards those who are given the food, which is a means of entering Paradise, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “You will not enter Paradise until you truly believe, and you will not truly believe until you love one another.” Narrated by Muslim, 54. It also fosters the practice of sitting with righteous people and seeking reward by helping them to do acts of worship for which they gain strength by eating your food.

It is narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam used to give glad tidings to his companions regarding the arrival of the month of Ramadhaan. He sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam has informed us that in this month the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained. He sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “When the first night of Ramadhaan comes, the doors of Paradise will be opened and the doors of Hell will be closed, and the devils will be chained, and it will be said, 'O you who desires virtue! Come forth and O you who desires evil! Stay behind', and Allaah has people whom He frees from Hell every night (in that month).” (Al-Bukhaari & Muslim).

Yes, there are three degrees of Islam, which are: Islam, eemaan and ihsaan. Each of them has a meaning and certain pillars or essential parts.
