US requests 25-year sentence for ex-child soldier Khadr
GUANTANAMO BAY (CUBA): US prosecutors on Saturday requested an extra 25 years in prison for former child soldier Omar Khadr, saying a stiff sentence for the Canadian detainee would "send a message to al-Qaida."
Khadr, in a deal with US authorities to avoid a life prison sentence, pleaded guilty last Monday to throwing a grenade that killed a US sergeant in Afghanistan in 2002, when Khadr was 15 years old.
"The world is watching," prosecuting attorney Jeffrey Groharing told Khadr in closing arguments a sentencing hearing before a special military tribunal at the US naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Read more:
